When creating a VM it gives a option to select N0. of Sockets and N0. of core .
What is the differance I select 2 sockets and 1 core per socket or 1 Socket and 2 cores per socket.

Hi Eric,
LAN simply means no WAN (or MAN) links, i.e. locally connected in the same data center. Without getting into a discussion about the differences between LAN/MAN/WAN, the statement here is is just that "Groups of replicated instances are designed to support clustering within a LAN connected single-datacenter environment". Link speed is only one aspect and as I'm sure you know there are many other performance and reliability characteristic differences. I didn't mention that JMS gets corrupt. Also, JMS isn't point-to-point. All Connection Servers get all JMS messages.
A multi-site View deployment design should be done in a way where a site failure or WAN link failure does not affect other View sites.

Thanks for the advice.
The only VM that is running has two virtual hard drives.
* Drive C is NTFS100Gb, contains the Win2k8SP2. It's in DataStore01 on the original first Hard Dirve.
* Drive D is an NTFS 250Gb, contains lots of data folders. It's in DataStore02, on the new second Hard drive.
* Memory: using 737Mb of 2Gb limit (of 8Gb real).
* Limits: Unlimited
* Shares: High (4000)
* Reservations: 0
The copying being done is all from virtual Drive D, to Drive D -- not between C and D.
I'm copying folders of 1Gb of small files from the same drive to another location on the same drive.

Скоро мое количество хостов перевалит 5.
Я так понимаю, вместо встроенного в vCenter SQL мне надо будет использовать просто MS SQL.
Вопросы
1) Мне надо будет его купить? И какой версии? И можно как -то в этом случае сэкономить?
2) У меня vCenter на vm. Можно поставить его(SQL внешний) на той же машине? И могу в такой конфигурации с помощью heartbit(раньше не сталкивался)
защитить его. В конторе SQL кластер не используется и пару серверов под него для одной, пусть важной задачи выделить проблематично
3) буду рад любым советам, ссылкам по теме настройки такой конфигурации, best practice и т.д.

Re: Poor performance on datastore during read and write actions on one esx host
We made some progres finally: It turns out to be the MTU size which triggers bad performance:
The host that performed good, dit have a MTU size of 9000 on the switch, but this was not effectuated. After we rebooted this host the performance went down as well. Changeing the MTU size back to 1500 and a reboot of both hosts gave good performance on both hosts.
Switching to the on board broadcom netwerk cards gave good performance on both 1500 MTU en 9000 MTU sizes.
So the issue seems to be:
4 intel nics -> in ip hash load balancing with a MTU size of 9000. Give poor performance when read AND write to the same datastore in some circumstances.
We tried to increase the HEAP memory.
We tried to set a fixed Interupt.
Both has not worked so far.
We decided we go into production with this cluster with a mtu size of 1500.
Still if anybody runs into the same issue and finds a solution we would appreciate it being shared.

Found out what "Out of Date " is.
But I am having problem with backup of server 2012. Some VM:s work and som fails with the same error :
E10055 failed to attach disk
Have seen this error when using Windows 2008R2.
Anyone seen this on Server 2012 ?
Any working work around ?

How to disable Unity Touch?
The desktops in our new VDI environment are managed with RES Workspace Manager, thereby creating a new start menu and using the RES Workspace shell. When using a VDI on an iPad, the Unity Touch utility shows the complete Windows startmenu, thereby providing users access to item's I don't want them to see. So I'd rather disable the Unity Touch feature.
Is there a way to disable the Unity Touch on iPads? e.g. some registry key on the server?

Re: Windows VM disjoined from domain after modifying hardware
Hi Paul,
I suspect that changing most of the properties of a VM will trigger full customization flow in your case. Which means VM will try to join the domain again. This normally shouldn't happen on VM editing. For instance, if you tweak only IP Mode of some NIC - customization will run limited flow which will only reconfigure the network. That should happen in other cases too. Please open SR.

@Photubias why are you bumping a thread that is well over 4 years old, replying to me rather then mmueck who is the author of this thread, while offering absolutely nothing whatsoever above an beyond what I've already said!? Either you didn't actually read the thread before you posted or you just like repeating something that was already said. Doesn't really matter as it was absurd to bump such an old thread especially under the circumstances of mmueck's issue which was only going to be resolved by the powers that be at is place of employment! Additionally base on what mmueck has said I'd say that unless his boss has the power and authority to override company policy this wasnt going to happen anyway!

Well, if you are copying small files, this might be normal. I have seen some test comparing hdd vs ssd where transfer speed while copying small files dropped on hdd even under 1MB/s (depends on fragmentation, file-size, etc). Tests were done in real environment (no VM) and iirc the hard-drive was "raptor" (one of the fastests hdd).
Just for comparison, try to copy single big file. But if you are dealing frequently with small files, maybe it is time to put vm-datastore on ssd...

How can i troubleshot errors in VDP? (i have not found any suggest in the logs from the appliance in the vfp-configure url)

Grazie mille, ho letto tutte le pagine ma non ho trovato scritto da nessuna parte del problema che riscontro.
Guardando però in giro ho trovato due potenziali soluzioni, ma che riguardavano Ati.
Una è di avviare l'intero Host con gia collegato il monitor, in modo che una volta avviata la vm se tutto funziona, rimuovere i vm tools e installarli in modo minimale; l'altra e di installare solo i driver (privi di utility) della scheda video in mod provv della Vm (sempre windows).
Nella giornata di domani proverò queste soluzioni..
spero vivamente di saltarci fuori con esito positivo

There won't be any difference in this case. This does however become important when you are using applications that are licenced per socket ... In this scenario it would be cheaper to configure a single socket with multiple cores rather than multiple sockets with individual cores.

Please confirm that you select Mac profile through settings==>keyboard&Mouse. while you meet this issue, did keyboard works on Mac OS X host since you might move mouse out of guest?

I didn't realize it was a four your old thread.
Didn't think he understoud the possibility to plug in a WiFi USB Device, full screen the Windows VM and head to the IT department.
BTW, I have something simmilar but completely different (is why I arrived to this thread); briding to WiFi adapters works perfectly unless the company is using WPA2 Enterprise (RADIUS services). I was thinking if there was any way around this (without using NAT).

vcpu settings
hi,
i'm trying to do some optimization on vsphere5.1. but met a problem:
i set the number of vcpu to 32, but actully i can only see 8 vcpus after i turned guest OS on.
BTW, host has 32 logic cpus, and we are based on win2008.

USB wifi adapters can't get DHCP lease
I'm using a Mac with Fusion as the host and running a Kali Linux VM. Main connection to the Internet is via the Mac's wifi which is bridged. That works fine.
I want to use USB wifi adapters with the Kali VM. I can connect, and the adapters come up (in Kali) as wlan0, wlan1 etc. I can also get them to scan APs using iwlist scan. But the adapters can't obtain a DHCP lease.
Do I need to 'connect' them to the Mac and use bridged networking instead? I was hoping to be able to control them from the Kali VM because I want to be able to use monitor mode etc.

Search datastores for VMDK
Hello,
I've not used the CLI much on our VM ESX 4 hosts, but I need to locate a VMDK someone has restored to one of our datastores (we have about 50 datastores), the VMDK has the work *sp4* contained with it, is there a way I can search for this?
